Capt. Baxter and Cmdr. Hayes are on the bridge discussing ship's business when a new ensign reveals himself to be a member of the powerful Q Continuum. Calling himself Q-Min, he warns that the crew of the USS Sisyphus isn't ready for their upcoming encounter with a mysterious force called The Quarv, and complicates matters by vanishing Sisyphus's weapons. He announces that the crew must all remember that which they have forgotten, and begins forcing them to relive painful memories. The Captain fakes his own departure to get the jump on Q-Min, and the crew try a seance to gain control of their memories, but its useless and Q-Min remains in control. The crew re-experiences painful break-ups; dead crewmates; and parents disappointed, perverted, and euthanized. Also an ill-advised breakfast. Dr. McCloud has no regrets, but is forced to dance, and the Computer is incapable of forgetting. Finally the Quarv ship arrives, crewed by the parents, lovers and shipmates from the bad memories of the Sisyphus crew. Captain Baxter boldly proclaims the value of repression, and orders the Sisyphus to flee at maximum speed. As the ship turns tail on the Quarv vessel its weapons reappear and a few photon torpedoes from the aft launcher obliterate the Quarv ship, which is revealed to be only an asteroid. Q-Min congratulates the crew on learning his lesson, which it turns out was to ignore his admonition to remember. He is asked to depart at phaser point and does so.
