Things are going well for the crew of USS Sisyphus: an overhaul of the engines has brought the ship up to spec, maintenance troubles are under control, and morale is unusually high. Whether the cause or the effect of these better days, Captain Baxter has extended operating hours of the ships' bar to 4am, with predictable consequences. Commander Hayes and LtCmdr Watson are debating the merits of the running the whole Federation on Greenwich Mean Time when a drunk Ensign Lorem(demoted after his rescue from planet Mumex) staggers in for the early morning shift, and Bloody Mary's proliferate at staff meetings. The Captain chooses to act on an idea he'd had the night previously, and informs Japhy Whitman that he's requesting the Counselor be replaced. Roaming the ship, Whitman encounters Ensign Lorem, melancholy over his loss of rank and unsure if Starfleet is still his home. The two hit it off, and after some drinks agree to take a shuttlecraft out for a raucous cruise. The ship notices the theft of the SS James Jackson when Lorem & Whitman broadcast a Success Call, the rarely used twin of the Distress Call, but with some maneuvering and tachyon tricks they avoid a tractor beam. Ensign Lorem suggests they never return to the ship, and tries to talk Japhy into joining him in his deep-seated compulsion to Violate the Prime Directive. The Counselor explains he's not really into the whole Directive thing, but knows that being a member of Starfleet is the best time he's ever had and he'd never walk away from it. He convinces Lorem to return to the Sisyphus, and his speech is overheard by Captain Baxter, who has beamed over to retake the shuttle with Lt. Fassbinder. Impressed by the Counselor's demonstration of conviction and people skills, the Captain decides Japhy can keep his job. Back on the ship the crew enjoys a drink, and even manages to call it an early night when a new compound Dr. "McCloud" is experimenting with packs an evening of drinking into a single glass.
