When the USS Sisyphus finds itself without a captain, First Officer Corbomite Hayes steps up to lead the ship on an important mission to the Neutral Planet. Its a development that leaves the rest of the crew questioning the wisdom of the chain of command; Dr. "McCloud" having assumed himself to be next in line to command, and LtCmdr. Watson wondering if they are all part of one of Cmdr. Hayes frequent holodeck programs. Despite the crews' doubts Hayes is ready to proceed, until the arrival of Captain Steve, a data-entry specialist who got a call from his Temp Agency that morning to take command of Sisyphus temporarily(or if he's lucky, temp-to-perm). Captain Steve is soon friendly with the whole crew(excepting Hayes); LtCmdr Watson, Lt. Fassbinder and Lt. Cola invite him to a lunch date of Parisees Squares; and the latter two discuss the odds of Cola sleeping with Steve during his tenure(their conclusion: pretty high).
Hoping to be regain command through a technicality, Hayes has Dr. "McCloud" check that Steve's medical records are up-to-date, but the doctor makes a shocking discovery: Captain Steve is not only a temporary captain, but a temporary human being. A clone grown for specific temp assignments, Steve has a lifespan of only a few days before he melts. Steve overhears this news and, having been unaware of the fact, gets a bit depressed. The crew resolve to help him enjoy his remaining time as captain, and on the neutral planet a morose Captain Steve and his landing party meet a Neutral emissary, who greets them indifferently. The emissary is nonplussed when its discovered the cargo the Sisyphus was delivering contains a massive bomb, but the Sisyphus crew feel the news requires some sort of response on their part. With only one hour until detonation, Captain Steve volunteers to eat the bomb, which edible for some reason(perhaps to avoid detection?). Proud to sacrifice his life, and basking in the the respect of the Sisyphus and the indifference of the natives, Captain Steve heads off to enjoy his last hour with some cigarettes from the Neutral Planet's Duty Free shop.
With Special Guest Brett Lyons as Captain Steve.
